Your Left Brain Getting in the Way of Progress?
This question is for all your left brain dominated people, is your left brain getting in the way of your progress? Some of you know exactly what I’m talking about and some are asking “what is he talking about – left brain?”
Okay, first, what is the left brain and how does it impact you and your performance. The left brain is the seat of your logic, sequential thinking, it is where your words are kept, and it is the root for your “practical” or task oriented thinking and thoughts. There is little emotion or creative impulse in the left brain – those are right brain activities.
So how does the left brain slow down your pathway to progress?
Progress needs some creativity or creative problem solving to modify performance and more importantly direction. The left brain can slow down the creative side of your performance and particularly limit your successful interaction with other people. This slows down the creative process due to a lack of ideas or stimulus to new ideas or thoughts.
Also, with the task mentality dominating your thoughts, the “if not invented here” thoughts sometime get out of control. Meaning left brain thinkers like to make their own plans and decisions and do not rely upon others as much for their direction.
You can develop your creativity if you exercise the right brain to work with your left brain, then you are capable of whole brain thinking and progressive ideas. Use daily mental exercises like the twenty idea method. Or never make a decision using the first thought – yes it could be the best answer – until you have a minimum of three alternative decision points. Then review which alternative is the best choice for the circumstances.
Remember, balance is usually the best choice in many areas of life. Creativity and decision making are areas that need balance. Thoughts that utilize the entire brain to form them are usually much more effective during implementation. Balance between pure leadership and pure management skills create more effective leaders.
Take time to learn about the whole brain thinking and how it will help you to be a better person in your professional and personal life. Enjoy your new life.
