Your Key to Success is about Relationships
Your ability to create, maintain and keep relationships with others is your key to success. In all areas of life, it is the strength of relationships has a direct bearing on your success – however you define success. There are different types of relationships – business, professional, social, family, customer, peer and boss. How good are your relationships in all these categories?
Make a list of the different types of relationships and rank them on a scale of one to five. One being the weakest and five being the ultimate relationship. After you have scored each category then look for patterns. What areas do you excel in? Which areas are you weak?
Interesting point here is many people show strengths in one area of life – business or social/familly. Few people have mastered great relationships in all categories. However, the true superstars of life have mastered all areas of relationship building.
I have found that many people have mastered all the business related relationships – yet are failing in the their personal relationships. These people have a tendency to judge or value themselves based upon their business success. Their whole life revolves around the ability to develop and maintain business success. The sad fact is these people rarely find true happiness in life.
There are also a group of people that are excellent at social or family relations yet have not learned how to transfer these skills to business relationships. Again, most of the time, these people are underutilized or poorly paid due to the lack of success in business. This is due to a lack of business savvy and strong relationship with customers or peers in business.
Then you have a group of people that have no strong relationships in any category. These are the failures in life. They cannot build any long term relationships and are basically unhappy and dissatisfied with life in general. Fortunately, this a small yet vocal group who enjoy telling everyone else about the troubles of life.
The true high performers in life are gifted in their abilities to balance long term relationships in both social and business life. They are at peace with their social and family life and look forward to time with friends and family. They are equally strong at developing the business connections necessary for success. They are committed to working with others, asking their opinions, involving others and being open in both communication and thought.
One of the greatest motivational experts of our time stated that 85% of our success is due to the quality of the relationships we develop. I believe he was exactly right based upon the people I have met and worked and played with during my lifetime – the ones that were considered a success had the work-life balance. Can you look at your life and guarantee success? Check out the balance and strength of your relationships and you will know.
