You Have to Earn It!
Listening to President Obama’s speech, one sentence rang out loud and true. “You have to earn it!” And, he connected to dots of this statement with Greatness. He is right, you cannot be given greatness – you have to earn it. This goes for business people and individuals as well as nations.
I have gotten tired of so many expecting something while giving so little. The greedy executive, union rep, sales person, manager, consultant or stockholder. You do have to earn it or at some point pay the piper! There are a few types that I believe need to re-think their positions. Let me explain.
I learned – the hard way I might add – that easy is not a substitute for hard work. I once tried to make all the quick and easy things work. The get rich quick scenarios! They didn’t work. Once I realized this I committed to earning my rewards and living. This strategy works and works well. A side benefit is how confident I felt as I moved forward earning my way through life.
Others have not learned their lesson yet. But they will – it’s just a matter of time. In the meantime, here are a couple of points to point you in the right direction.
First, pick something that you have passion about and a high level of interest in learning. This is a key for the continued drive that is necessary to deal with the adversity and challenges that come to slow you down. Having passion about what you do will provide the motivation until the returns come your way – for being the best at what you do.
Second, begin a lifelong journey of learning. Learn about your passion (that’s the easy part.) Then make note of additional factors that come into play regarding your passion. It could be business related – what else do you need to know for your consistency and success? Even things you are passionate about will change as you move forward. Adopt an attitude of flexibility – keep learning.
Third, create a vision of what you want and what it will be like when you get there. Understanding that there is a difference between arriving and with continuing to move forward. Your vision is the ideal and your ideal can change or modify in time. The key is to keep your target in mind.
Finally, create action plans to get you to the vision. The action plans combined with the first three steps will ensure that you get there faster. A plan creates increased awareness of who you need to team up with for success, what specifics you need to learn, where to get additional knowledge and what has to be done first.
You can have anything you want – if you earn it. If it’s given to you, there is a high probability that you will give it away or lose it. Focus upon what you want, earn it and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
