Which Are You Providing – Clarity or Confusion?
One of the known issues in business today is the element of complexity. As a Leader, you need to guide your people through the maze of complexity to a world of simple solutions and progress. So, what is the real issue?
Seems like confusion is higher ranked, mostly by default than purposeful actions on the part of leaders. I know, you’re asking “everyone is dealing with complexity so what can I do about it?”
Good question – really, I mean it 🙂 The only missing piece of the question is “how can you take responsibility to change the situation for your team?”
First, let’s look at what is happening without dealing with the complexity…
- Higher priority tasks are being ignored as people deal with the activities they feel they can eliminate faster.
- Distractions take an increasing toll on productivity
- People feel less engaged and out of control due to infinite levels of stress created by complexity
- You have a steady stream of people taking your time to get questions answered before taking action
- Lower levels of energy and enthusiasm are evident in the workplace
- Customers are neglected or worst case – ignored.
Second, what can you as the leader do to make your team more productive?
Eliminate confusion regarding what needs to get done first by adding a heavy dose of clarity for your team. So exactly how do I do this you may ask?
Here is a checklist of purposeful actions you can take to help propel your team into the ranks of high performers.
- Create a Vision of the Ideal Work Environment – what exactly is your purpose and what does a well functioning team look and sound like in your vision?
- Communicate Your Vision to Your Team – engage them in how this can be done from their point of view. Take suggestions and dialogue critical points with the team to show you respect their opinions and ideas.
- Encourage Your Team to Focus upon creating Repeatable Processes to provide stability and simplicity in the work areas. Take time to have the actual team design the core process with a goal of creating a core system for fast response and execution.
- Assign experienced problem solvers to handle the exceptions to the process rather than create an added layer of complexity to your core processes. This is the primary reason for reorganizations – to eliminate complexity, increase response time and matching talent to the workflow processes.
- Track progress using “stand up meetings” making encouragement and engagement a standard practice keeping processes moving forward. You want to reinforce your vision during these “mini-meetings” and reward your people who are executing your vision with gusto. 🙂
Remember, it is the leader’s responsibility to provide the clarity of direction and purpose for your team – it is not their job to create it, it is their job to execute your vision. Share your vision on a regular basis and recognize people for their execution of your vision. Provide the “guiding light” for their success and your success is ensured.
