What Are You Thinking About – Past, Future or Present?
To some people this is a strange question to ask. A stranger situation is for people to be thinking about the present – what am I going to do today? So what do you think about most often?
The research says you are probably like the 85% of the population that are thinking about the past. When I first heard that 85% of the time, people are thinking about things in the past I truly didn’t believe it. Yet, the more I listened to people talk, asked questions about their thoughts and did my own brand of research on this thought processing I came to the same conclusion.
People spend 85% of their time in the past.
The sad thing about this fact is thinking about the past is wasted time and energy. The only value we can get from the past is to learn from our experiences. Anything else is pretty much wasted time and energy, since we cannot change the past. The past is over and done.
So what should we be thinking about?
Some believe we should be thinking about the future. That is where the action will be at some point in time. And, some people spend a lot of time thinking about the future and hoping for changes in their life or results. The interesting thing about the future is – that it’s in the future! It is not in the present so it does not change any results or outcomes now.
Thinking about the future is a good thing for creating a vision of what you what to be – in the future. This is a form of visualization and is very helpful in programming the mind for progress to a goal or a method to totally solve a problem. So, think about the future maybe 5% of your time and create a clear vision of what you want to be, have or become in the future.
The real key to your success is being able to place more time and energy in the here and now – the present. This is where the action is and when you spend the majority of your time thinking and acting upon the present situations, you will get better results.
Resist the temptation to join the thundering herd talking and thinking about the past. There is nothing you can do to change the past so stop it. I know it’s safe because there is no uncertainty about the past – the past is an objective fact. It’s like watching an old movie for the tenth time – it’s safe since you know the plot and the ending – yet it is a waste of time!
To get better results in life think and act in the present. The past is over and gone. The future is only for guiding you in the right direction. It is the present time that counts and more importantly, it’s what you do in the present that really counts.
