The Fallacy of June as Effective Communication Month
Look, maybe I’m reading this the wrong way yet when read about June being the Effective Communication Month – it implies this month is the only month for using effective communication. GEEZ.
May this is the reason we have so much ineffective communication during the year. No one is focusing upon effectiveness in communication the other eleven months of the year.
I know I’m making an issue where there should be none, yet, think about how the world would be, how your organization would be – if everyone was focused upon delivering effective communication everyday of the year.
When I share communication tips and techniques during our Effective Communication for Results workshops, people finally understand the simplest method to use for improved communication. So why is this information not mainstream information? That is the question of the year.
Effective Communication is a process of choice rather than chance. You can choose the best method to get your message to another person – assuming you know how to flex your style to the other persons style. Simple technique with great results when it is used properly.
The starting point for a person to be able to flex is to first know their communication style. How do you prefer to communicate. If you do not know the answer to this – well there are two things to do. First, pay attention to how you communicate with others – fast pace or slow pace, forceful or passive, loud or quiet, confident or safety first, and there are many additional factors to know. Or, second, request a Behavioral Insights report from me and you will get a 20+ page report showing all your natural strengths and weakness for behavior and communication.
The next important point is you to become aware of the different available styles others can use and recognize these styles or preferences quickly. When you know your self and then can recognize others, you are well ahead of others who haven’t thought about communication and how important it is to get it right.
Practice flexing your communication style to others and learn the best ways to flex your style for others. The others part is the most critical part in the long run – since when they believe you are like them, sharing information becomes easy and simple. When people are inflexible and expect everyone to just know them well – is a mistake made especially by managers and some leaders.
Finally, learn the words that work for others and use them in your conversations, emails, texts and letters. When used properly, you will be concerned an excellent communicator and others will look to you as an example and mentor.
If you are unsure of your communication style or wish to enable your entire team to the advantages of Effective Communication, please contact me and we will discuss the best methods for your situation. The important key is to take action as soon as you recognize the need. Ineffective communication leads to major disagreements, lost productivity, and misunderstanding between peers and customers. Free yourself of these limiting factors and have effective communication working for you all year round.
