Recognize the Symptoms of Job Burnout
Burnout can affect any one of us during any point in our lives. By knowing the signs and symptoms of burnout, as well as the how and why of its visits, we can possibly reduce the likelihood of its ravages or perhaps even prevent the visits altogether.
Common emotions associated with burnout:
- Hopelessness
- Helplessness
- Resentfulness
- Overwhelm
- Emptiness
- Emotional exhaustion
- Emotional detachment
These emotions can manifest in the following symptoms:
- Lowered immune system
- Physical exhaustion
- Pessimism
- Increased absenteeism
- Decreased job performance
- Lack of excitement and enthusiasm about life
- Change in appetite and sleep patterns
- Lack of motivation and energy
Left unchecked, the emotional signs and physical symptoms of burnout can lead to social withdrawal and isolation, severe depressive states, drug and alcohol abuse, as well as increased illness and accidents.
A well-lived life is a life lived in balance. There are also certain factors that may potentially cause burnout. In our next posts we will look at ways to combat burnout as well as ways to prevent it from visiting in the first place.
