Personal Development Really Is Important
Interesting thing talking to the leaders, managers and sales people with all sizes of organizations, the number of people who tell me they do not have time for Personal Development is alarming.
How do they think or feel they are going to get better over time? Opps! That’s the real issue – they believe they have all ready arrived. Especially the highly educated left-brained individuals who think they already have all the answers. These people are dangerous to the health of your organization.
Now that is a strong statement – being dangerous to the health of the company – yet, it is true. There are reason for this statement.
First, younger people need more experience to have more choices in their decision making. Yes, more choices or alternatives actually give you more control over situations. The more choices the better the probability that the right decision will be made to improve the outcome. Too many inexperienced and smart people have a fixed opinion in how everything should be or problems solved. Remember the old saying:
“When you are hammer, everything looks like a nail!”
Second, knowledge and information is doubling and tripling at amazing speeds. The current knowledge we possess today can be totally obsolete within a short number of years depending upon the topic. Therefore, we have to learn every year or we actually fall behind others. Maintenance of our current knowledge levels can be overwhelming. Just ask some of the IT people how fast information is doubling.
Third, as we learn more, surprise, we realize there is even more to learn to be an authority or expert in a subject matter. It continually amazes me how often sales people stop learning new sales techniques or methods – even as the buying environment radically changes before their eyes. They continue to use techniques that are outdated and only frustrate the customer or prospect – thus the commodity world of sales!
Finally, personal development is the only plan that really works over time. We enhance our efforts when the development is goal driven – we want improvement or knowledge in certain or new areas. Personal Development is the faster pathway to gaining high self-esteem and the self-confidence needed to perform at higher levels.
Your future success is dependent upon having a continuous personal development plan. Then execute the plan with consistency and discipline.
