Performance or Politics – Which is More Important to You?

Today I’m expanding on yesterday’s post by asking the question…

Performance or Politics – Which is More Important to You?

I’m asking this question because of two reasons…

  1. It’s Your Choice
  2. It has a direct influence on your long term status in your job

Let’s look into these two reasons. First, it’s a choice. It is a major choice that every person holding a job or position must think about on a daily basis. It is really critical to your long term success in your professional life. Why? Because high levels of performance will always keep you employed. No one in their right mind lays off a high performer. Yet, there are times when this happens and I have found it does not take long for the high performer to land a new job – usually at a higher salary and with more respect.

On the other hand, politically motivated people will finally reach their level of incompetency and lose their job. This could be due to a power shift and being on the wrong side leads to cuts. Or worst, the person who is using political favors to maintain their position are found out! What’s found? They have limited skill sets regarding job performance and have relied upon others to cover for them through the years. These are the first people to get cut during any down-cycle or head count reduction.

The second point is all about the longevity of your job or career and your long term success. To keep your position and be a key member of the team – it is performance that counts. Just like being accountable getting the job done on a higher level than others, consistently getting the difficult assignments accomplished and solving the tough issues using thought and experience – being known as a high performer has major advantages.

The political person on the other hand, is not respected by peers or subordinates. They know the real person and what they are doing, therefore, over time others show little respect and the team’s performance drops due to a lack of desire to work with the political person. In coaching some of these political types, I have found they overly depend upon their title power rather than personal power.

The main point is simple – focus on performance at all times and be politically aware. This is the major point I repeat to my coaching clients each week. By focusing on performance (the right thing to focus on) an individual will become invaluable to their organization, peers and bosses. Performance is what counts in the long run. Being politically aware means you will not be taken advantage of by someone who has chosen the wrong strategy.

Make your choice to focus upon performance everyday. Then you will play to win today and everyday thereafter. Your long term success will be enhanced and secure. And, over time, you will see the politicians falling off the bandwagon of success and heading in the opposite direction.
