NeuroScience – Is Going to Change Our World
I keep running into this word – NeuroScience. Okay, I was just like you when I saw the first time – what the heck is it? What does it mean? And, more importantly – what will it mean to me? (Actually learned that being self oriented is part of the research findings.)
Okay, NeuroScience is the technical term for the study of the brain and how it really works. This is truly breakthrough information and is impacting everything we do. I know “everything” is an absolute term – sorry – yet it is true. We walk around everyday with our brains working at nanosecond and faster speeds – and our brain controls our thoughts and actions.
Are you getting my meaning here – Neuro, the brain is with us all the time. When you apply science and scientific techniques to learning how the Brain works – well we have some potential breakthrough learning. And, we have done just that.
My first introduction came from a Bert Decker book on communication. Later, my partner began sharing more information she was finding due to her work with the sub-conscious mind. Next, I read a breakthrough book on marketing entitled “NeuroMarketing” which changed everything I have done in the world of marketing our organization on it’s ear! GEEZ! I felt things were different and difficult – this book opened my eyes to new and simple.
Currently, I have discovered several new books on the topic and have been like a great sponge soaking new information. Books like “The Hidden Brain” and “The Buying Brain” are opening my world of possibilities for greater success.
Okay, enough about me. Let’s talk about Neuroscience.
Seems our brains are divided into more than the standard discussion points about the left and right hemispheres of the brain. These elements are still there and influence our choices based upon our dominant brain hard wiring. However, the new information is we have three brains within our brain. (I often thought I had multiple personalities. 🙂 )
The three brains are…
- The New Brain or the Thinking Brain
- The Middle Brain or the Emotional Brain
- The Old Brain or the Reptilian Brain
Each of these brains influence our live and most assuredly our choices in everyday life.
Here is the important summary version for your leaders out there.
Our Decisions and Choices are Governed by the Reptilian Brain which may or may not have been influenced by the Thinking or Emotional Brain!
This means our choices are made by the old brain stem located brain which has been around for over 100,000 years. This brain is dominated by survival and taking care of ones self rather than others. (The only exception to this is the female with children according to the research.)
This new information is and will turn our business worlds upside down. The marketing world is the first to truly experience the new findings especially in view of the Great Recession of 2008-2010.
The other areas being impacted by this new research is leadership and management since we need to understand this fight or flight response triggered by the Reptilian Brain as we lead others.
Another area we have found the need for change is in the world of sales. It is not in the best interest of individuals to be sold anything. It is in their best interest to buy what they need and want. The days of the old school presentation model of selling is dying rapidly. The sales people who have been using the Questioning Model of Selling are the big winners currently and in the future.
