Mentoring Tips – Making the Relationship Count
“We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”
– Winston Churchill
Tips for Making Mentoring Relationships Work…
DO…
- Establish TRUST
- Respect confidentiality
- Be a good listener
- Allow your mentee to make small mistakes
- Be a good sounding board
- Assist your mentee with support networks
- Provide resources (time, suggestions for reading material, stories)
- Set clear goals and expectations about the relationship
- Establish regular contact (phone/email/in-person)
- Provide honest feedback
- Be a good coach
- Provide constructive coaching
- Set healthy personal and professional boundaries
DON’Ts…
- Be careful of being judgmental
- Remember…you don’t have all the answers
- And remember, that’s ok!
- Let them be their own person, not a “mini-me”
- Be careful not to “own” their problems
- Exercise caution with spending and gift-giving
- Be careful not to betray their trust
Mentoring provides value to both parties. Make yours a meaningful experience for everyone!
