Internet Marketing has a Multi-Level-Marketing Edge
I know this is a little different from my usual business insights post, however, my ah-ha alarm rang true this morning. Internet Marketing is the newest version of Multi-Level Marketing ideas.
I was a little slow in picking this up until lately since I had assumed that all this Internet Marketing gurus were focused on helping people like me figure out how to use the Internet as a marketing tool. Yet, lately I’ve been seeing a new side of this promotion – affiliate links and linking.
Using these tools, the people at the top – the people with the 100,000 plus email lists – have partnered together and started promoting each other across the Internet. And, they are all talking about the making the six and seven figure incomes while living in resorts, surfing all day, touring the world and having every man toy you can image.
How are these people successful? They promote a quality of life that most people want and don’t know how to do it by themselves. Amazing! It’s all about the emotional sale using the Internet as the media to promote rather than filling up a room at a convention center and hawking their products.
Now don’t misunderstand me, some of the information they provide is truly outstanding and some of it is just bad. Yet, people are shelling out thousands of dollars to get the “secrets”, the “magic bullet” and the complete template to success, fortune and lifestyle. Who can resist the tempting siren song these people are putting out in the market?
The thing that is getting my attention is how these “marketing gurus” are bragging about making tens of thousands and upwards to a million dollars using other people’s products using the system of “affiliate links.”
Now if you don’t know what I’m talking about it is the hidden code on a website page or a “hyperlink” in an email asking you to check out a product. The implication is that it is their product, so trust me and check it out. If and when you buy the product or service, someone else cuts a check – commission – and sends it back to the original person who contacted you.
There is nothing illegal or really bad about this process. However, there are some questionable tactics being used by some people – like locking up valuable website URLs (addresses) and using them for “link farms” to sell ads and other people’s products and services for a commission. These addresses have a very high correlation to keywords searched by individuals using Google, Bing and Yahoo.
In conclusion, you can use this information to understand the Internet marketing world a little better. You can get on the bandwagon and attempt to move into the land of the “guru’s,” use some of the techniques to create passive income for yourself, or learn to use the MLM nature of Internet Marketing to expand your product and service sales. Good luck in whatever choice you make.
