Had a very interesting discussion this week with a corporate executive who was complaining about the latest integration failures with a recent acquisition. As we discussed and dialogue the subject the issue became quite clear for both of us.

They were relying upon a group of Fast Tracking Managers to development and deploy the integration of the acquired company into their organization. Mistakes and issues were popping up it felt like we were watching a popcorn popper rather than a well organized company prepare for the future.

So what happened in this case (and many similar situations) was a lack of maturity and in depth knowledge about the industry and how people get the job done. In fact, I would call it a Job or Task Maturity Level issue which needs more leadership. In this case, I’m talking about leadership making certain all the “right” issues and elements of a merger or acquisition are being done.

What causes the Fast Track Managers to have a limited frame of reference or even limited choices to ensure their success. So here is the background for Cause and Effort Analysis of a Fast Trackers Mindset. Continue reading ‘Strategic Mistakes Made Due to Fast Tracking’ »

Today is number 5 in the twelve part series on learning how to Breakthrough to the Next Level.

K in Breakthrough equals Knowledge

Knowledge is your advantage for every breakthrough in your life. It is the catalyst for finding new and better ways to implement your strategies and tactics for success. I had given some thought to using the word Kaizen for Knowledge. The reason I didn’t is due to more people use this term for business reasons than the original intention or definition of Kaizen. The original definition called for continuous improvement in a holistic environment thus covering all functional areas from personal to social to business. As most of you know, our corporate slogan is…

Getting You to the Next Level.

Yet, while we are in our 22nd year of doing this, the current economic environment has had a major impact upon our business, our clients business and upon the lives of the great people we have worked with during the years. So, this weekend I was thinking about all the factors involved in the demise of the economy and its impact upon our friends and associates – I realized it is time to breakthrough to the Next Level. Today I’m touching on an issue that seems to be at the center of many things going on today. Such things as poor customer service (hot personal topic!), social behavior, leadership, and sales people with little knowledge about their profession, customer or products! A lack of learning and developing a bank of knowledge is very disheartening.

Some examples include leaders or managers have no clue about their people’s performance or no clue about how to deal with people who differ from the manager or leader. A leader or manager should be trained or knowledgeable about personal traits in order to lead and motivate them effectively. In addition, there needs to be interaction to observe and review performance – then train, coach or mentor people for improvement.

Getting ready to go to my daughters second graduation and this thought kept coming into my mind. She has been offered a great new job. At a high level within the company – reporting to the CEO. What an honor and how proud I am. So why the thought! Because this week she called me and told me how lucky she was to have me as a role model. One of the more important things she gives me credit for influencing – is her desire to read books. Not fiction, books with meaning that are business related. She took this lesson to heart and has used it to become a true leader.

She now has other people asking her about books she is reading. Why? Because she is knowledgable about business, marketing, economics and leadership due to the books she reads. Then she applies this knowledge in her environment – gaining a competitive edge on others who are waiting to be told or shown the pathway to success.

Enough bragging about my wonderful daughter. Let me share some my real world experience back when I was doing turnaround work back in the early 80′s. I was asked by two different companies to assist them in getting back on track. Both companies, while independent of each other, were in the same industry, different markets with basically the same problem. Continue reading ‘Leaders are Readers’ »
