Identify Time Wasters

As we talked about earlier this week, we all have the same amount of time each day and each week.  How we use this time most often determines our success and satisfaction in life.

Time wasters can be both frustrating and distracting.  In fact, studies have shown that if your concentration is removed from a task it can take fifteen to thirty minutes to get back on track. And even more time is lost if the interruption was dramatic! Yikes!

One of the most important time management tasks you can undertake is to identify your time wasters.  These time wasters can be people, tasks, habits, things, your own personality quirks, etc. that get in the way of being more effective with your time. “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.” We have all heard this famous quote by Thomas Paine, the author of both Common Sense and Crisis that were so influential during the American Revolution.  A similar quote has been attributed to General George Patton, “We herd sheep, we drive cattle, we lead people.  Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way.”

In the last few weeks I have heard this phrase used several times on national news broadcasts.  I’ve heard it used in reference to BP and the oil crisis.   I’ve heard it used in reference to our President.

Richard Smith, CEO of Cisco Systems, recently said in a Newsweek article, “It’s important to know what you don’t know.” That’s a pretty profound revelation!  And it takes a very confident and competent leader to admit that they don’t know everything.  Kudos to you, Mr. Smith!  Let’s hope other leaders take direction from your words of wisdom. “In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.”

Franklin D. Roosevelt

The Fourth of July holiday is upon us.   How many Americans think about our freedom on this day of Independence?   Independence Day is the commemoration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.  This declaration gained the United Stated independence from Great Britain.

The estimated number of citizens living in this new independent nation in 1776:

  • 2.5 million

The estimated population on July 4, 2010:

  • 309.6 million

The Fourth of July is the day we pay homage to our Founding Fathers.  It is also a day to honor and pay tribute to the brave men and women who have fought and died to maintain our freedom.  And July 4th is a day when we pay homage to our own freedom.

“Those who won our independence believed liberty to be the secret of happiness and courage to be the secret of liberty.”

Louis D. Brandeis
